What are common myths about glaucoma?

Author: Dr. Joel Solano

Myth 1 – Glaucoma can be cured.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for glaucoma. Once you have glaucoma you will need to be monitored by your eye doctor for life. Glaucoma can be managed and controlled to reduce your risk of losing vision but this should be done under the oversight of your eye doctor.

Myth 2 – If I miss taking my eye drops, its ok because I can always have surgery later to undo the damage from glaucoma.

Glaucoma is often called the ‘silent thief of sight’ because it can take your vision without you realizing it, particularly when it is early in the disease cycle. The key to glaucoma is to be persistent with your treatment because there is no way to recover vision that is lost to glaucoma. Even with surgery, once vision is lost to glaucoma, it cannot be recovered.
